The use of this new addressing scheme is one of necessity really as the Internet grows and each device connected to the Internet needs an 'address' or unique identifying number, the current 4 billion is not enough believe it or not. So the big brains who do these things decided do not do another step up and say double that number, instead they decided to well and truly future-proof the system for a long time to come and not only build into the new system much needed security and convenience features (for increasing speeds amongst other things), they also built in the capability to address 340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,456 devices or so. Which is enough for multiple addresses for each and every grain of sand on Earth, in case you were interested. Us mortals wont notice anything for a long time. At least for a few years whilst the technology is installed across the rest of the online businesses and communities including telecoms companies/ISPs. Eventually we will need new Routers and Modems to utilise this new protocol but thats some ways off yet (2-3 years minimum). Check out The Beeb's chat with Paul Twomey here Δ |
