Pirate Bay Fights Back Sep 26, 2007 - Sheri Bloor - Permalink

Piratebay Pear
Torrent tracker Pirate Bay's filed charges media companies for allegedly hiring hackers to take down the music-piracy service, and unintentionally launching a tidal wave of irony on legal systems around the world.

The website announced that it unearthed proof of several record and movie companies for resorting to illegal tactics to squash the torrent-tracking site's own illegal activities. Pirate Bay, a site that tracks BitTorrent feeds that allow computer users to steal music and video online, alleges corporate-sponsored denial-of-service attacks, server hacks and general e-sabotage as a means to reign in illegal trading of copyrighted material.

"Thanks to the email-leakage from MediaDefender-Defenders we now have proof of the things we've been suspecting for a long time; the big record and movie labels are paying professional hackers, saboteurs and ddosers to destroy our trackers," the site's statement read.

Most of the companies cited were based in Sweden, where the pirate site's servers are located. Pirate Bay alleges Twentieth Century Fox, Sweden, EMI Music Sweden, Universal Music Group Sweden, Universal Pictures Nordic, Paramount Home Entertainment (Sweden), Atari Nordic, Activision Nordic Filial Till Activision (U.K.), Ubisoft Sweden, Sony Bmg Music Entertainment (Sweden), Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Nordic all engaged in digital warfare on its servers.
